The last few days seem to have been dominated by news about Facebook and the changes they have made to business pages. After switching all Facebook profile pages to the new timeline layout earlier this year, businesses can now also redesign their pages before the company will enforce the change at the end of March.
An elementary change is that Facebook pages can’t have a default landing page anymore. Now all visitors to the page arrive at the timeline. In the old format it was possible to direct visitors to an intro page and sometimes even encourage them to ‘Like’ the page before revealing specific content that was only accessible to Facebook fans. This isn’t possible anymore in the same way which is a very interesting and bold move from Facebook and will probably cause a stir amongst online marketing professionals. However, landing page apps can still be added to your page.

There are several new features that will help online marketers:
First of all, there is the page cover – a large photo at the top of the page which has instant impact. Secondly, the company name is displayed right underneath the cover photo and in a larger font. The profile picture overlaps the cover photo and sits right next to the company name. Facebook advices businesses to use the company logo as profile picture. The entire header section of the new layout is basically about branding and it is here where you can make an immediate impression.
Tabs to your page applications are positioned right underneath the header area and therefore allow for easier access. They can be reordered and the thumbnails can be changed, although there is only space for 4 tabs and all others are hidden behind a drop down to the right. Marketers need to think about which tabs to move to the front, particularly as the first tab will always link to your photos.
Because of the wider 810px wide frame of the new timeline layout, there is now more real estate for apps which had to be squashed into 500px before.

You can now hide/unhide posts, highlight them and move ‘the post of the week‘ to the top of the timeline which will stay there for 7 days. Important: posts can be set to be administered before going up on the wall. This should have page administrators sleep a little quieter at night. Moreover, post dates may be changed and an entirely new feature is the milestone.

Create a milestone for an event that’s been very important for your business. Milestones will be displayed page-wide and so be much more prominent.

Connecting with Friends
Apart from the usual wall posts, friends can now also send private messages like on Facebook profiles. These will then appear in the new admin panel of your Facebook page from where you can reply to them.
